The Space in Between

a to b is all they see
and the space in between
is a wasteland place
concrete neighborhood
land race

asphalt town is all around
(whose fault?)
asphalt town is all around
spoiling the seas and
bloodying the ground
and the air up there
shuttlin’ around
like we just don’t care

altered pace
patsy to peace
a little bit o grease
a poison that pleases
wheezes to the bejeezuz
buzzes and pops
never stops

Artist's Description

If I could sum up the pedestrian experience in one word it would be “vulnerable”. Vulnerable to fumes, to noise (ugh! squeaky brakes, loose belts, big engines, horns), and to being hit or even the suggestion of being hit by having people drive too close to my body, as though I were little more than a curb, a shrub, or even some other obstacle with the advantage of possessing a bumber.

Most of my friends drive, and most of them drive faster than is respectful of the neighborhoods they drive through. I know people would have a different attitude if they spent more time on the outside of their car.

I’m not as militant, aggressive, or naive as some of my more in-your-face pieces would suggest. I don’t tell my friends and family how to drive, but wouldn’t that be poetic if I was hit by a rock thrown from an irritated pedestrian while riding as a passenger in one of my friends’ cars?

See these other pieces if you’re not too disturbed by my negative take on the automobile and what it’s done to community, neighborhood, health, culture, and planet.
