Disclaimer
Please bare in mind this tutorial was written for those who have very little experience with, or knowledge of Photoshop. It is in no way a definitive guide to using photoshop, it is however a great starting point for those who are just beginning and feel overwhelmed with the complexities of more advanced tutorials. It is also NOT a substitute for good sound photography skills. It will not magically turn a poorly taken image into a spectacular one, only time, experience, patience and practice with your camera will do that.

I’m am very, very grateful for these tutorials as I missed them the first time around. And I am totally inept with Photoshop (using Elements 6) – so inept that I cannot even create, let alone merge two layers. So I hope you have a “layers for dummies” tutorial on tap as well – lol! This is really very generous of you!
Simone Byrne replied
My pleasure Lianne and don’t worry, once you start losing the “fear” and playing around with the program you’ll be fine. I was the same way when I first started. How about I write you a Basic Layers Tutorial? It may be a few weeks before I’ll have time to get to it, but I promise I’ll whip one up for you as soon as I can :))

Hope you don’t mind, I sent the link for this off to all the members of my class from today :)
Simone Byrne replied
Not at all Mel, in fact I’m really flattered :)) Hope they find it useful :))

I do a slightly different thing with the last technique, so it’s good for them to see other options….I’m sure they’ll find it useful, cos I’m useless at making up written tutes, I just do it while they watch….heh
Simone Byrne replied
Hehe, yeah I’d sooner teach hands on too, is much easier (and less time consuming!)... soon I’ll be able to teach this to my “students” too, though we’ll be doing web design more than photography, still this is a good one for them to know. ;))

Thank you very much for this brilliant tutorial Simone, I have a very old Photo Shop 7 and after reading through this info I’m excited as to what I may be able to do now.
Like Lianne I would also love to see a tutorial on layers – that would be fantastic :))
Simone Byrne replied 21 days ago
My pleasure Kathy, I hope you find it useful and yes I will eventually post a basic tute on layers, just been a bit busy of late :)

Hey Simone. Nice tutorial. Can I just ask, is there a reason why you use “threshhold” for adjusting the blacks, whites and shadows instead of using “Levels”. I saw you had the curves option there. I was taught about Levels in a course I did and have tended to stick to that since learning about it but these days most of my colour tweaks are done in the RAW processor.
Simone Byrne replied 16 days ago
Hi Mark, I generally prefer to use curves (threshold) as it corrects colour cast more accurately than levels and levels alone can often cause patches of burnout in skies.
