Alicia Nicole of Silent Shutter Studio is a Florida based photographer and makeup artist.
As soon as Alicia registered and created her profile page in my Photography Directory I asked her for an interview which I have “automated” by creating a list of questions called: Photographer Self Interview Questions

I really like Alicia’s photographic style, it is daring, exciting, creative and I truly love the photograph that she put on her profile page! Plus she is outspoken and fun to read about!
So without further delay here is Alicia Nicole’s photographer interview:

Q: Do you like to talk about yourself or your pictures? If yes, about what aspects of photography? If no, why?

A: I’m not much of a talker about me kinda gal. But I’ll tell you oodles about my work. I guess I don’t need to say much about whom I or my personality is. It shows in how I express myself through my photos.

Q: How would you describe your attention span?

A: very short, unless something GRIPS and holds my attention, like working on photos till 7 am lol

Q: When did you decide to become a photographer?

I’ve ALWAYS had a camera on me, always. I remember the 1st camera I was ever given by my mother. And I guess it just branched off from there. From nature, to music and then eventually fashion/art.

Q: What does photography mean to you?

A: it means my life. as in, I involve every aspect of what I do into who I am. I am colorful, different, bubbly, dark, melancholy, sexy, fresh! hahaha and I try to express how I feel about things as well as how the model feels.

Q: Can you recall the first photo you took that made you go WOW!?

A: If I’m not mistaken it was a photo of myself, surprisingly. As a Geisha. It astounded everyone. again, surprisingly lol

Q: Do you have any formal training regarding photography?

A: Nope unless you qualify art books as training. Everything I’ve learned I’ve taught myself. I’m damn proud of that. :]

Q: How technical is your photography?

A: Not that technical. At least for me it isn’t. I guess you sort of create your own way of working and how the art you create depicts.

Q: How do you feel about cropping?

A: I try to do it in camera. Leaves for LESS photoshopping. I’m down with that.

Q: Where is your favorite place to live and work in the World and why?

A: Well I have to admit I love the cold weather. And my mothers side of the family all lives there. It’s possibly the most beautiful winter time I’ve ever seen. just some many diverse locations and people.

Q: Define the word “beauty”!

A: I can’t. and the person who CAN doesn’t really know what it means.

Q: What is your most favorite and least favorite word in photography or life?

A: canon, lol I hate to say it, but I’ve met the most rude canon photographers. I guess I’m just biased cause I love my Nikon! Go Nikon!

Q: How do they make you feel?

A: insignificant, like they’re better then everyone else. sorry I refuse to spend 5000 on a lens. not everyone can afford that. and you don’t always need expensive equipment to create what YOU yourself thinks is art.

Q: How does your personality change when you look through the camera?

A: I guess I turn into an optimist, so you can say. I look at everything with rose colored glasses on. energy just feeds my way.

Q: How do you feel about missed shots which cannot be recreated?

A: try your best to find the chance to shoot them again. we always have time. it is of the essence!

Q: Ever concerned about failure?

A: who isn’t, but that is what makes you more great. your downfalls. builds character!

Q: Who are your influences?

A: Helmut Newton, Herb Ritts, Ansel Adams, just a few of the many that continue to inspire me everyday… who inspires you?

Q: What is your favorite image, either your own or someone else’s or both?

A: possibly the new one I’ve done recently “bonjour”.

Q: Describe its creation or meaning to you?

A: I had a real blast creating it. with my loving partner in crime Tomas, and close friend Mehr (as the guy of course lol). Everything seems to fall in place when you put all your minds together! the meaning, well… its saying that were all equal, in power! hello, here I am, a woman, a person and I have opinion, beliefs and ideas. I should not be shut out just because I am not that of male “genus”. I promise im not a feminist! hahaha

Q: Describe a day in your personal or professional life.

A: not too fast pace. unless its a day full of clients or a shoot. then the chaos begins. but theres always time for fun and laughter. I like to keep it upbeat. happy energetic!

Q: What are the biggest personal or professional challenges you face on a daily basis?

A: self confidence, it surrounds everything! your work, your life, etc etc. and thats something we all can agree on.

Q: What has been the single biggest obstacle against growing as a photographer in whole?

A: trying to build what my art is today! and always trying to make it bigger and better. but I guess theres only SO much you can do. I mean not everyone can be perfect. and im okay with that. cause I’m doing what I love. and THAT is important!

Q: What are your favorite subjects to photograph?

A: my friends. I’d rather have a gang of good friends over willing to model then some elite stuck up model who can’t walk a minute to the pool for art. lol but besides that, I love nature. Ansel Adams is one of my largest inspirations ever. he is just AMAZING.

Q: Tell your funniest, scariest, most bizarre, most touching story from your photo shoots!

A: only times when its scary or bizarre is when it involves either turning someone into a zombie or making them a psycho killer that eats flesh! ahahahah most touching, I’d have to say when I photograph children. they’re just so delicate and gentle. and being able to be the person that captures those 1ST emotions, a smile, laugh, frown, tear. it’s just WOW. what more can you ask for?

Q: Have you ever thought about or actually stopped doing photography?

A: ya, thats what happens with self confidence gets to you. i.e. people who try to say they’re better then you.

Q: What were the circumstances?

A: I ended up realizing that no one is better then anyone. well overly speaking. technically. well, everyone grows. and I kept on photographing. it’s what I love. it gives me life. without I would be well. you know.

Q: Do you ever have photographer’s block and if yes how do you deal with it?

A: I guess not? I always have ideas, but I blame that on the fact im also a designer. so theres never a lack of ideas or information going through this brain!

Q: What types of assignments are you attracted most?

A: artistic/colorful! sorry I think fashion my own way!

Q: Describe what black and white photography means to you?

A: emotion, and depth.

Q: Do you think of yourself as an artist and what do you think of the word artist?

A: everyone who creates what they love and continues doing it, yes, I guess I am an artist. cause I believe what I’m doing, will influence and inspire people to try new things.

Q: How do you describe your photographic style?

A: crazy! ahahhaha I’ll give myself that, I dont really see anyone who has my style! don’t jock it now! :]

Q: What has been the most surprising or most predictable reaction to your photographs?

A: either okay… I don’t get it. or wow, thats a lot of color/contrast!

Q: Tell a little secret about yourself that no-one knows …

A: I don’t really have any secrets, I’m pretty open. I wear my heart on my sleeve. and my mind!

Q: Who or what would you love to shoot that you haven’t already?

A: oh man. movies. I love to be a photo director for movies. it just would, I cant even describe it. I would love it so!

Q: What would you have done differently during your photography career so far and could this be an advice to others?

A: NEVER EVER, LISTEN TO ANYONE IF THEY DON’T BELIEVE IN YOU. IT’S NOT FOR THEM TO DECIDE WHO MAKES WHAT YOU DO AND HOW YOU DO IT. IF YOU LOVE IT ENOUGH AND PUT YOUR ALL INTO IT. THATS EVERYTHING. THATS LOVE, THATS DEDICATION, THATS DRIVE. that’s art.

Q: What other thoughts would you like to share?

A: never stop believing in yourself. cause you never know where life might take you. or with whom :]
