Rudolf Helmis
This is very good Jemma,
The spiral draws the eye down to the centre of the image. The figures add to the quality of the photo.
shutterjunkie replied
Thanks very much Rudolf!

Thank you Nicole!
Derek Dobbie
Remarkable image. well set up and exposed. well done.
shutterjunkie replied
Thank you Derek!
Philip Johnson
stunning im assuming hand held?
shutterjunkie replied
Yes Philip it was handheld. I can safely say I took a good 30-40 shots of this, including several varying exposure ones to piece together as HDR, but they didn’t turn out looking anywhere near as good as this standard shot.
Jigsawman

mimmosso
Beautiful. I tried to take a picture of this as well once & it didn’t turn out quite as good as this, so so nice.
shutterjunkie replied
Its quite a difficult subject to shoot actually – so many angles going on and people walking down it all the time. I took about 30-40 images to be sure I had one that I would like from them with the composition I wanted :)

Crispin Gardn...
Exposure is spot on Jemma. lots of interest, love the focal length and those highlights on the balustrade and hand rails. A Fav.
Crispin
shutterjunkie replied
Thanks Crispin! I was quite lucky with the lighting I think. It was mid-day so the sun was overhead and beaming through the lightwell, which created the highlights on the stairs and balustrade :)
Deb Gibbons
fantastic!

Thank you Deb!

stunning shot, love the colours of the people against the darkness of the structures

A.M. Ruttle
There’s so much fun about this, the strong vortex we get drawn into, the tiny bits of color and movement, the overall shades of grey, the nice wide lens (and full frame sensor); and isn’t it fun that after taking a bunch of shots to create an HDR, that one hand held shot ruled the day – touché!!
shutterjunkie replied
It wasn’t much fun taking so many HDR versions and no using any no, as they really filled up the compact flash card ;) Thanks for your comment!
A.M. Ruttle
p.s. And congrats on the Feature in the Canon group – well deserved!

shutterjunkie replied
Thanks Stef. I’d love to say ‘there’s always next time’ – but I suppose this is one of those places you maybe only go to once! If you do go back, then at least you have a mission :)

billyboy
OK, let’s just face it Jemma… I’m such a total sucker for spirals. And when they’re in gradient shades of grey, and with random figures dotting the descent… and with ornate art nouveau bannister and single pedestal at the center with a flash of red and yellow against the monochrome right where my eyes come to rest in this pefectly engineered composition… it just goes orgasmic.
But it’s not only down to the form itself. It’s as much to do with how you place it in its frame. Since the beginning of human appreciation of art, the spiral, placed in roughly this position within a frame of these proportions is accepted as the most visually pleasing composition.
I can’t explain why that is, but I dig this massivley and that’s why it’s spiraling its way into my favs.
Awesome work!!
shutterjunkie replied
Billybob – thanks so much for taking your time to write such a detailed comment! I’m very glad you liked the image – many thanks!

Sherial Vaughn
This is very good! Do you earn a living with your photos? Have you ever thought about using your photos for geeting cards or calendars?
shutterjunkie replied
Hi Sherial – and thanks for your comment. I used to work as a studio photographer shooting sets for companies, but the rest of my work has been personal and to be honest i’ve never really done anything with it. I recently did get quotes for creating some greetings cards – but that and redbubble are as far as I have gone to selling them.
