This represents a small detailed section of the castle in progress.

This winter, Mall of America® will bring a one-of-a-kind experience to visitors from around the world. Ice Castles, will build its largest structure ever, a castle that will stand more than 40 feet tall at its peak and span two acres.

It all starts with an icicle. Unlike typical ice structures that are built with ice blocks, the Ice Castle is made of icicles organically grown from 4 million gallons of water and then fused together. The castle will join 50 large ice towers together to create a series of shimmering archways, tunnels, walls and caverns. In the center courtyard looms the largest frozen tower, reaching more than 40 feet high. Latticed icicles connect the icy columns to the tower, creating roomy caverns. Inside the Ice Castle, there will be several “Throne Rooms” with a chair large enough sit several people. At night, the castle will take on a magical look as thousands of LED multi-colored lights illuminate the ice from within.

Very cool! I have never been to the ice sculptures at the MOA – bet they are neat.

  • Thanks Lynne, it was very cool, downright frigid, ;~) If you get a chance to see them you won’t regret it, it is a work in progress and we saw it at about the halfway point. We plan on revisiting when they reach their peak heights and grandeur! There’s about 43 days left!!

Very cool Steve!! …saw this when I took my nieces to the Mall, but of course, they would rather shop and ride than experience the Icicle Castle!!! lol Great image! xx ~kim

  • Thanks Kim, they still have a way to go before they reach their peaks, but it was definitely cool to see! It was probably the first time we went to MOA without ever entering the mall! ;~) Glad you liked it my friend!!
