Sunday, May 22nd, 2011 marked a dark day in North Minneapolis history, a devastating tornado swept through my childhood neighborhood, damaging 800 homes and destroying 35.
Also in the path of the tornado was one of my favorite places in Minneapolis, a small island on the Mississippi River that was home to over 200 Great Blue Herons, we would visit in early spring to watch as they built their magnificent nests. Today we learned that approximately 180 Herons were killed in the tornado, the surviving birds, including the young, were relocated to an animal rescue and rehabilitation center in Roseville, Minnesota.
I don’t know if future colonies will nest on the island, hopefully they will, for it is such a grand sight to see so many beautiful wild birds so close to an urban setting.

I am heartbroken about the tornadoes, too. I grew up near Joplin, Mo. There are over 120 dead and 1500 missing. I hope this weather pattern changes soon before there is any more loss of life and property. I am sorry for the damage in Minneapolis.

  • Minneapolis was lucky in comparison to Joplin, only a few lives lost here, and nowhere near the amount of destruction that Joplin suffered, my heart and prayers go out to all the victims. Scary to think that tornado season has only just begun.

Such a gorgeous shot and textures work! So sorry about the loss of life and devastation from the tornado. It has been a rough spring for many this year!

  • Thank you Angie, glad you liked it! We tried to get near the island today, the park is devastated, while we were out they issued more tornado warnings. Crazy time of year for weather!!
