Great Black Wasp, sphex pennsylvanica, also known as Katydid Killer, is a large solitary non-aggressive black wasp of up to 1 1/2 inches in length. One of the solitary digger wasps, it feeds on nectar, sap, and other insects.

Slurp, slurp, slurp!~ That’s what his pose says. Excellent detail, and I’m astounded looking at it. I’ve never seen a black wasp, or never realized that was what I was looking at if I saw it. Love the color contrasts too. This is a perfect photo.

  • Thanks, It’s actually a Great Black Wasp, fairly abundant in the gardens around here in Minneapolis, and you may have seen them in Austin. Glad you liked the shot!
