In the family

Hello Chaps and Chapettes,

Firstly, as a surprise for all those who thought I’d shuffled off this mortal coil at long last, I have to report that, as of 16.30 on Thursday 23rd August 2012, I haven’t!

Secondly, my youngest son Robbie has developed an interest in photography in the last year or so and has now developed enough skill and confidence to start posting on RB. Any support or encouragement you could give him would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

The Old Fart

Christmas Card

Many of you will be familiar with the image below, taken last winter, of a mute swan trudging across the frozen surface of Loch Ard.

A larger, and better, version of this can be seen at my website karlwilliamsphotography.co.uk

This is now available as a Christmas card to be sold in aid of RSABI, Scotland’s charity for helping people who have depended on the land.

Please note particularly that all, repeat ALL, proceeds from the sale of this card go entirely to RSABI and that I don’t benefit personally AT ALL.

Should you be inclined to support this very worthwhile charity, please click the link below to buy your copy:

Thanks

Karl

How can I become a Landscape Photographer?

Every now and then, I receive a request for advice on landscape photography, along the lines of “How can I improve my results?” or “Could you recommend a workflow?” – or, in one memorable instance: “How can I become a Landscape Photographer?”

Naturally I’m flattered that somebody should think I’m qualified to give this sort of advice, but it puts me in a bit of a quandary as to how I should respond.

I suppose I could point them towards the million-and-a-quarter (at least) websites which deal with the compositional “rules” of landscape photography – you know, middle thirds and all that bollocks (and that word gives you a revealing insight into my general attitude to such matters) – but that would be about as much use as pointing someone towards “Rugby Union: Laws of the Game” (published by…

MAN WITH A BIG COCK

So what did you think it would be, then?

[Late-breaking observation]
The fact that a fair proportion of the commenters are of the female persuasion reminds me of a rugby club I used to play for. In the ladies’ loo, there was a life-size painting of a naked man on the wall – with an enormous hinged figleaf in the appropriate location. When this was lifted, it revealed the message: “Congratulations! You have now rung a bell in the bar!”

Away for a bit

Just in case you wonder whether I’ve dropped off the perch at my advanced age, I’ll be away on hols for a couple of weeks up in the Highlands and in Skye.

I’ll be meeting my bestest pal Barb so it’ll be touch and go whether I return in one piece!

Keep your fingers crossed for some decent weather!

TUTORIALS

Some of you have politely enquired as to whether I’m alive or dead, because you haven’t seen the grinning gorilla around for a while.

Well, I think I’m still alive (at least, Sylvie tells me I am – just!), but I’ve been a bit busy:

Those of you with good memories will recall, about a year ago, that I wrote a couple of tutorials – one for HDR processing, and one for the use of the NDx1000 filter. Since they went down quite well at the time, I’ve rewritten them (pictures, screenshots, links – all that sort of thing) and have uploaded them to my website in PDF format – so they can be download, saved and printed.

Here’s the link:

Hope you like them and find them beneficial.

NEW WEBSITE UP AND RUNNING!

OK .. so I haven’t been around much in the last week or so, other than to dash in and dash out once in a while.

The reason: I’ve been busting my gut getting my new website together. I’ve been toying with the idea for a while now but was finally persuaded by my good pal Babs to get my @rse into gear and get moving. My goodness, it’s been hard work .. not least because the uploading of nearly 300 full size images took bloody ages. Then there was the captioning .. and the tagging .. and the tarting up .. I’ve never had so many cold dinners (“I’ll come in a minute, darling .. just put it on the table”) in my life!

Click the link HERE and see what you think. If you feel inclined to do so, an entry in the guestbook saying what an unbelievably tale…

Canon Customer Support

Further to my recent journal diatribe about the incompatibility of my Canon printer with the Mac OSX 10.6.x operating system, and its consequent incompatibility with reputable third-party software such as Adobe Photoshop, my discussions with Canon have now concluded.

The end result is that I’ve been provided with an acceptable workaround (not by them, I might add: see below) for the printer profiling problem, but the deficiency in their printer driver, and the consequent partial incompatibility of such with Photoshop, remains unresolved (although I’ve devised and tested an acceptable workaround).

Just on the off-chance that some of you find the necessity to contact Canon Customer Service about a problem you’re having with any of their products, here are my observations based on MY experie…
