Waking Up at Convict Lake

Waking Up at Convict Lake

This was taken moments before the sun cast its first warm rays against the mountains. Watching a sunrise in the Sierra Nevada mountains is hard to beat. It isn’t called the Range of Light for nothing. The quiet peacefulness before dawn slowly escalates as it gets lighter and the animals come alive.

This is an HDR created using Photomatix Pro.

I love this place! I thought maybe you’d used an ND filter (like in the old days, before Photoshop:) but then I saw the corners of the sky and could tell it was a pieced-together image (along with the slight halo over the mountains). Do you have the original two (or three) exposures we could see?

  • Justin Mair replied

i do indeed. I would have used an ND filter if I had one handy at the time. I decided to do the HDR since this was taken before dawn and I couldn’t get the correct exposure with just one shot…even 2 shots didn’t capture it all.

I love the rocks in the foreground; they’re perfect little gems of stone. Isn’t it nice to wake up to that kind of light?
