Granite versus Pine
The granite may be tough but the pine has to defeat it in order to live and grow. At treeline there isn’t much dirt…It’s mostly granite boulders and the occasional monolith. Trees grow out of cracks in the granite and as they get larger they split the rocks in a fight for survival.
Taken at the trail summit near Treasure Lakes, Little Lakes Valley, Eastern Sierra Nevadas of California.

Justin,
Wonderful shot and great description. I have a shot of a lone tree growing real well on the side of a slope of Granite. Just off High Way 120 just before Tuloumns Meadows. I was on the way to June Lake Loop when I spotted it.
I’ll find it and post it.
Thanks for the memory.
