Vicarious

Medium: Acrylic Paint on Acrylic Paper
Size: 12” x 16”
Description:
Based on the first song from the Tool album 10,000 Days, Vicarious was completed in early 2009 and was an attempt at a more surrealistic style.
I don’t watch a great deal of television anymore. In recent times I have noticed that there are a lot of people who do nothing but work then go home and stare at the box. This is fine in some respects, I’m not here judging those.
But one thing that stands out to me is society’s obsession with the misery of others, violence and strange. It bares a stark likeness to the Victorian fascination with the side shows in carnivals. People who never miss and episode of a soap opera or even delight (subconsciously) at watching grim events on the news, are tapping into vicarious voyeuristic behavior.
In my piece, the mountains of televisions represent portals in which we, as humans, stare through into strange worlds.

Wow – what a deeply symbolic image! Are those sperms surrounding him? Bukkake in the Post-Apocalyptic Media World!
Lloyd Harvey replied
Ha ha, no its not sperm… They’re eye balls and their cords. Would be freaky if sperm was that big though…

You have really captured that feeling of a society always watching, always disapproving, always judging! And the masks we wear to appease these forces!
Lloyd Harvey replied
Well thanks very much!
