East End Kids

East End Kids

One of the first street shots I ever took back in 1964 in the East End of London. This was before Playstations, and probably the only ‘toy’ these kids shared between them was a skipping rope. Old bomb sites still held a fascination though as a form of amusement and exploration, as can be seen here. It was taken using a Yashica Mat 120 film twin lens reflex camera that took me six months to save up for. I used Tri-X B/W film and printed on a hard grade of paper to get the punchy contrast, a characteristic of all my early B/W work. This image was photographed digitally from the original print in my portfolio.

Your work is a continued fascination to me. This is real history! And a treasure! It’s like finding a treasure trove of historical documents! Andy history buff would jump to get this! And all of your earlier works! I hope they do.. :) x

  • John Hooton replied

Thank you Elaine. I started taking photographs with a Kodak box camera and developing my own film at the age of ten. I was new to London and just turned 18 when I took this. It was a damp Saturday and I had a day off to try and find some pictures.

Great image John! A true snapshot in time!

  • John Hooton replied

Thank you so much David. I wish I had taken more in this genre looking back, but I did not have much free time and I wanted to be a fashion photographer!

    Superb B&W John.

I think I must be the same age as those kids, given the year and looking at them.

  • John Hooton replied

Thanks Richard. Looking back they were simple times. Just an f/ stop and a shutter speed. Focus you took for granted through the waist level finder.

nice capture of a timeless piece. That’s the thing I like about photography. The images outlast us all.

  • John Hooton replied

Thanks George, the strange thing is that unlike some others, I remember details of this day quite well.

Stunning image, the b&w is perfect, I remember playing on old bombsites in my long ago youth too. Portsmouth was a major target during the war because of the Dockyard, my grandfather was working on a ship in dock when it was hit by a bomb in 1941.

  • John Hooton replied

Thank you for your comments Sharon. Portsmouth did indeed suffer some heavy raids the first major one being on the 10th January 1941. The raid started at around 6:40pm. I wonder if that was the one your grandfather witnessed?
