The gorge is situated about five miles East of Saint Paul de Fenouillet, South of France, on the D10 road. The Agly or "river eagles’ which sinks to the bottom of the gorge Galamus is a small river coming of Pech Bugarach which dug this deep gash several tens of meters into the rock.
Agly river is fed by numerous springs and tributaries sometimes hot (27 ° C), which are located along the gorges. Most of the water consumption of the downstream village, Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet is met from this source.
Gorges are geologically composed of limestones and dolomites of the Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous (between -205 and -108 million years).
The Hermitage of St Antoine de Galamus was built during the seventh century and clings to a cliff on the western side of the gorge.

Peter Reid retired from teaching in 2002 and returned to university, achieving MA photography. Since then he has travelled throughout Europe researching on two fronts; Human Rights and the Photographer and European Gothic Architecture. He holds Associate membership of the Royal Photographic Society and is a member of The Royal Musical Society. In 2012 he was successful at ABRSM grade 3 Piano, and now grade 4 beckons.
