Basilica di San Pietro

Peter Reid

Houghton Le Spring, United Kingdom

Artist's Description

The first shrine to St Peter was built by Emperor Constantine and was erected over his tomb, near to the place where he was crucified in the Circus of Nero. By the middle of the fifteenth century it was in a state of considerable disrepair and it was at this time that Pope Nicholas V gave instructions for it to be renovated.
Fifty years later, Pope Julius II appointed Bramante to the position of Architect for the new Basilica. Further procrastination meant that it was not until the end of the first quarter of the seventeenth century that the new basilica was consecrated.
The basilica is a precise implementation of Bramante’s plan, with the dome to a design by Michelangelo. The façade was designed by Maderno while the oval colonnade surrounding the piazza to the front of the basilica is by Bernini.
It is as it was intended to be: the world’s most important church.
