Today Is My Son's Birthday

This is a poem I wrote for my son shortly after his demise. The foundation for his headstone had been poured as we waited the time for his youngest brother to build his headstone with the stones so familiar to his now lifeless hands. A headstone created from one of the many stones he handled throughout his life. As you can see, a wooden cross awaits the mason’s hammer and chisel. Till he is ready to build, this wooden cross held this poem of love for the caretakers’ purpose that was so gracious and kind to respect my wishes.

Today is my son’s birthday
Please don’t take his memorial away
I thank you for the consideration you’ve shown
And this little piece of land, he can call his own
His life was somewhat lacking in some things
But he still knew how to cause your heart to sing
It seemed there was nothing you could do to him,
That he wouldn’t soon forgive
He valued the life, which God had given him to live
Though he no longer lives and feels the same things we do
His love is just as real and his memories are just as true
I know you may wonder why I spend so much time here
Beneath this clay, lye’s a most precious son, so dear
When I no longer am able to visit his grave
And beneath this same soil my body shall lay
There will hardly be visitors, to come here anymore
So, please give your indulgence as you have before
By this good deed being granted
May God bless every good seed, you have planted.
