Hi, my name is Sherial Vaughn and I’ve been into photography only three years. One birthday I received a fancy camera and that’s when it all started. Had a lot of trouble, learning how to make it work. I didn’t even know how to work a cheep camera, much less a fancy one.
But, I was determined to learn come heck or fire water. I didn’t know what to take pictures of and I drove my family crazy. I was always taking photos of them sleeping, picking their nose, bending over etc… You get the picture, I drove them nuts. They just didn’t get it…..I’m an artist, I’m supposed to be different.
After taking a beautiful shot of my step son asleep on his bed. His mouth was wide open and spit was dripping out. Then “Stinky” his dog, was licking the spit off of him. Not sure if the dog licked inside his mouth or not , but I had to capture the moment. He was not happy with the photo and went to dad and ask him, to make me stop. Well you guessed it, his father closed me down. I was never to take another picture of anyone, unless they asked me to.
I was crushed and wondering what I was going to take photos of now. But just as ole dad was ordering me to stop, the dog ran by us. At that exact moment, I knew , Stinky was going to be my subject from now on.
Soon I got bored with the usual dog photos and added clothes on the dog. One thing lead to another and I was building sets for the dog to be in. I started buying doll furniture, clothes and anything else to put into the photo. I wanted the picture to look real.
About this time my husband thought that I was going crazy. All I did was shop for props to bring home. He called it junk and I called it being creative. I was printing out 8X10s and putting them into a binder. I took it everywhere I went and showed it to anyone that would look at my photos. I would even take it to all the stores I shopped at and even to the vets office. I couldn’t stop! I always had to top my last good photo and that ment, buying more props. The shopping was never ending, day after day after day. But….I was getting really good and I couldn’t stop now……
Anyway after the divorce, everyone told me to try and earn a living, with my dog pictures. So that’s were I’m at right now. Trying to earn a living doing photography. I take all kinds of photos now, not just dogs. I’m also an artist and do oil paintings and have, for over 43 years.
