Coal Conveyor by Richard Shepherd

If you ever go an on explore with me you will learn two things. I’m usually the daft idiot running off at the front of everyone so i can see everything and start planning shots before people get in the way (which has the added bonus that if you are a bit scared you get someone to go in front and get jumped out on first, heh) but also you will know the instant i find something industrial or with an engineering feel to it, because all you will hear is “Oooooooohhhhh”. This was one of those things. As soon as i walked into this boiler room i knew i was going to be in here a while taking pics, and i was right. In this picture you can see three huge boilers with two coal hoppers each. Running on rails along the front of these is a giant coal conveyor, whereby coal would be put into the large bucket in the bottom left of the image and conveyor carried up into the green hoppers into the boilers.

oh god….reminds me of my childhood….Bowburn Colliery and my Grandfather in Esh Whinning coming home and scrubbing off the coal dust in his tin bath. And miners gala. Gorgeous. :)

  • Haha, you are a Bowburn lass? I’m from Wheatley Hill so its from the same kind of heritage that i get my love of mining, industry etc. Small world, hell i used to go through Bowburn regular, remember seeing the pineapple church etc :)

well I have to confess I’m from the ‘posh’ end….well, Whinney Hill in Durham. I went to Durham Comp so was always tootling about in Bowburn and Coxhoe….gave Doggy a wide berth though, didn’t want me eyes blacked :) God, I miss the North East.

  • So thats why i could never get anything delivered reliably, hehe!

If you miss the NE you should come back, at least for a visit, its changing fast now i find!

Absorbing amount of detail in this one Shepy – thanks for the narrative – love reading about the shots … ha … yes you MUST come to Aus when I think about it – there are some sewers under the city you’d love!!

  • Rosalie, im enjoying doing the narrative, explaining to people what its like to be on a site like this, answers a few questions ive had via BM. Im not so sure about the sewers though, not sure i would fancy that idea!
