Manta Silhouette-flying past the sun at noon by

Manta ray (manta birostris) caught in mid flight as it flew above my head on the corner of a bay……wonderful!
These rays often have remora fish attached to them by a special sucking disc in the place of a dorsal fin – you can see 2 of their tail fins in the silhouetee of the manta above. The remora hitch a ride and use the manta for transport, protection and there is discussion as to wether the remora lives on food debris that the manta eats or if it waits until any food has been digested and lives on it’s faeces.

I only started Scuba diving last year and am already a PADI advanced diver with Dry Suit and Nitrox qualifications. I love diving!! However all of this pales into insignificance because I have yet to see a Manta Ray and you have produced art from one of nature’s most amazing creatures. I love this photograph.

  • Hi Stephen – many thanks for your lovely comments! You have it all to come!! I have been diving for some years now & it seems you have the bug and the appreciation of it too….I never tire of it….I still get excited before each dive even though I’ve kitted up thousands of times – it’s such a privilege – keep getting in – your manta will come!!

    Absolutely stunning!!! Fav!

  • Thanks Todd for your kind comments!! And for favoriting it! Have had a look at your page – your work is amazing – so you will know that feeling when I took this shot – I have a series of them which I may upload – I had such a great time taking them, the mood of the dive was amazing, I thought it was looking good when I took it but was really pleased once I was back on the boat – the shot captured the manta flying overhead as I had experienced it – one of those dives you won’t forget!
