Newton Hills Forest
A great walk through rich forest brought us to this lovely scene.. I just had to do a pano shot of this!
“Glaciers created this narrow strip of rolling hills and forest that is part of the geological formation called the Coteau des Prairies, which extends along the eastern boundary of South Dakota. At its highest point, the Coteau rises to more than 2,000 feet above sea level. Artifacts and burial mounds found near the park indicate that a Woodland Indian Culture inhabited this region between 300 B.C. and 900 A.D. The area’s unique dark forest, amidst a vast open prairie, has prompted many recent legends, including of buried gold, robbers’ hideouts and horse thieves.”

Thanks Angel!.. It was muddy after a storm so
the wood is still wet in this shot!

This is one of my favorite places in Eastern SD. My wife and I go hiking there at least 3 times a year and I have been known to sneak in during the winter, too. Throw on a pair of snow shoes or cross country skis and you get a whole different view of the area. I would love to see more of your captures of this area.

Awesome shot! Just love the beautiful deep rich greens of the foliage contrasted with the darkness of the trunks! Makes me think of Lord of The Rings and I expect a hobbit to come waltzing down that path any second! Excellent color and composition and works wonderfully as a panorama!

Indeed!.. or perhaps ‘Lost’? lol

Beautiful and mysterious, it certainly looks like an enchanted place!
