Universe and His Laws
Written for a Creative Writing class.
A powerful old man has all he sought,
But none with whom to split—
Surrounded by naught,
To sorrow he does submit.
He gives up what he did retain
To free his tired mind of all that pain.
He exorcises his disgrace
With an unheard roar.
He unleashes Space,
Who yawns and stretches evermore,
And he uncages Time,
Who wings into motion with a chime.
His walls the old man does tear,
And he spreads all he did hold.
He keeps nothing but a chair,
From which to watch as things unfold.
And as his goods leave his hands
Their shapes ignore all plans.
Independently they change,
Yet to a pattern they stick—
The old man forged the full range.
Planets roll from his brick,
And his lamps burn into star,
But the universal rules do not bar.
Over some planets, Time flutters
And sings of change unknown.
His amazement the old man utters
As life more physical than his own
In those planets grows as it should,
In spite of the unlikelihood.
In a planet a certain shade of blue
A haughty species emerges thus,
And the old man’s rage they stew:
“Everything is centered on us,
And we’re sole in the stars we live among.”
Their science is too young to prove them wrong.
The old man yells—he is sour—
But their ears are shut by pride.
He wants to punish them, but has no power—
He’s just an old man sitting aside.
It is part of his rules, remembering he sighs,
That arrogance leads to demise.
