Heather, great comment! I agree. What the viewers don’t see, they unconsciously fill in. They become co-creators of whatever story your image is telling them, bringing in their personal tastes, prejudices, desires, etc. It becomes interactive, a conversation. Never seen a two-dimensional image that can compete with a viewer’s imagination. It’s an adventure creating every image. You’re always walking a thin line – you don’t want to be too obtuse – what’s the point? – but if you’re too obvious, what’s left for the viewer to fill in? Where’s the interaction? I’ll try to emphasize an emotion in an image, nothing more specific than that – and the image will get comments from viewers about what they think is going on, different stories, all over the map, but all containing the intended emotion at it’s core. That is, when it works. It ain’t easy. Some hit a home run almost every time. The rest of us, not so much, but we keep going up there, swinging for the fences. Speaking of unnecessary baseball references, Willie McCovey was my favorite big league player. I just threw that in to see if anybody actually stuck with this. If so, would you write a comment or an email and tell me who my favorite baseball player was. ha! thanks. :)

Sarah – yep, that’s my reason for no title, except when it doesn’t distract, force the focus to one element, or when a title adds something. Plenty of times that’s exactly what the artist wants, to make one statement. It’s pretty fluid, image to image. Check out freebornman’s work. Without titles his photos would be…...well, still damned good, bad example, but they wouldn’t be as funny! I posted this with a title, “beautiful dreamer,” from the Stephen Foster song, then pulled it about a minute later. Better if the viewer peeks into the boudoir and decides that she’s sawing logs and she’s beautiful. Having said all this hoohah, I try to adhere to a rule of slapping a name on a picture by the time I post the next one. For one thing, who wants a lot of pictures named ‘untitled’? Also, I don’t get a lot of reaction from people in charge of redbubble -home page, feature, that kind of stuff – a little, nothing to crow about – but like maybe everybody here, I’d like to, it would help get my stuff out there and I read somewhere “have a title, they want that – okay, I don’t live in a vacuum, I live in a house that could use a vacuum, so she’ll have a title in the next couple of days. Since you mentioned it, any ideas? :)

I love this photo and agree with Heathers comments above – so many photos of up close and personal body parts my imagination just isn’t engaged. I love to look at a photo and fill in the blanks with my own story. The stories in my head are usually darker, more disturbing or in the stratosphere of risque as it is. And this photo stretches those thoughts in my head in a very enticing way!!

p.s. So is McCovey, aka “Big Mac”, your favorite player? I know precisely who he is – there is a statue of him at AT&T park (been there many times) just over right field fence. That area, called McCovey Cove is named after him. He was voted into the baseball hall of fame the first time he was on the ballot sometime in the 80s. However, I’m a rabid Angels fan myself.
