Britain's greatest view
Taken with a Canon 50D, Sigma 10-20 lens at 10mm, F11, shutter speed 1/25 second, ISO100, tweaked in Photoshop
I went for a walk up Scaffel Pike (England’s highest mountain at 978 metres (3,209 ft)) yesterday with some friends, the weather was very kind to us, more of which later. This is a view of Wastwater which was voted Britain’s greatest view on a TV show a few years ago.
Wastwater is 3 miles long, half a mile wide and 260 feet deep, and the deepest of all the lakes. Wastwater is surrounded by several huge mountains which includes Red Pike, Kirk Fell, Great Gable and Scafell Pike.

Well done mate, that sky nearer the end of the day was great, don’t know if it was like that up there..
Shaun Whiteman replied
Cheers Jase, the clouds were clear on one side of the mountain, on the other side (Wastwater side) the clouds were below us…stunning to see!! We were down before the sunset…the two hour plus drive back was a bit of a pain!!
Steve & Lesley
funny you should put this up Jason and I were both talking about this the other day – excellent shot and well done on your ascent
Shaun Whiteman replied
Cheers Steve, it is a stunning location, loads of photography options from the valleys and up on the peaks….it is a pain to get to though!!

I think it was judged correctly as the greatest, and your shot could take the same grade. You are really getting value out of that Sigma lens. Glad to see no HDR.
Paul Thompson ...
Great shot Shaun, you made it there then!!!

Wonderfully well shot Shaun and I remember the saying about Wast Water – the deepest lake, the highest mountain and the smallest Church. I love your choice of foreground interest and the viewpoint is superb. Somehow I always remember Wast Water for the steep screes that created a gloomy and forbidding atmosphere but here you have found the perfect answer to that. Great work mate. Peter
