Great Crested Grebe

Great Crested Grebe

Taken with a Canon 50D, Canon 100 – 400 L series lens @ 400mm, F5.6 shutter speed 1/800 second ISO200, edited in Photoshop

This shot was taken at the Loch of Lowes rspb centre in Scotland. Last time we were here we had an Osprey hovering above our heads for about 20 minutes looking for fish, this time the Ospreys were more illusive!

The Great Crested Grebe is 46-51 cm long with a 59-73 cm wingspan. It is an excellent swimmer and diver, and pursues its fish prey underwater. The adults are unmistakable in summer with head and neck decorations. In winter, this is whiter than most grebes, with white above the eye, and a pink bill. It is the largest European grebe.

Cracking shot. These buggers are nearly always in the middle distance and insist on diving as soon as you point anything at them, but then you know that.

  • Shaun Whiteman replied

Yep he was under water quite a lot, after 10 minutes swearing I got him!! Cheers again!
