The Sybilline Oracle

The Sybilline Oracle by Sophie Shapiro

The Sybilline Oracle

In 204BCE The Sybilline Oracle advised the Romans that if they wanted victory against Hannibal in the Punic Wars they must bring the Great Mother to Rome. Accordingly the goddess was brought from her sanctuary in Pergamon in Asia Minor in the form of a block of stone and received, also in accordance with the Oracle, by the Roman Centurion Cornelius Scipio.
