I personally am devastated by this news. I spoke about my recent trip to Grand Cayman at the MacHerps Annual Show. It was only October last year that I spent two weeks volunteering at the Blue Iguana Recovery Program and developed a close bond with Pedro and several other Blues. Pedro is confirmed dead since entrails were found outside his enclosure but his body is still missing.
Here’s more info about it from the International Reptile Conservation Foundation – Blue Iguana Recovery Program’s partner.
I encourage you all to visit this link and make a donation – anything you can spare and make sure you click the drop down menu to ‘Blue Iguana’ so the money goes there. They now have to spend money on security measures – that means less money for the iguanas to they need all the financial support they can get! Thanks guys.
100% profits from the sale of prints go to the Blue Iguana Recovery Program on Grand Cayman Island where I was fortunate enough to volunteer for two weeks last October. B.I.R.P.
I should also point out that the two females killed were only weeks away from laying precious eggs – they too have been lost, a great blow to the conservation effort. However there is still hope with a few adult breeders remaining and juveniles awaiting release into the wild!

So sorry to hear that terrible news Shannon..I will do all I can to help. Pedro.. was such a beautiful specimen. Have you thought about joing and placing a photo of pedro in the art for conservation group? It may help and get this message out across the bubble. Good luck. I hope they find out who did this and I hope they make them pay..

Such a sad state of affairs, how shocking and such beautiful creatures, your images of Pedro are just wonderful. I’m really sorry to hear such terrible things can be done to these poor defenceless lizards. I admire what you are doing and I hope the slaughtering, mindless idiots pay for it too :(

I wanted to add this post to the ‘Art for Conservation’ group but it says it’s not accepting submissions.

Thanks Tracey, I cried for days when I found out – completely devastating.

Hello Shannon, Carmel (moderator of group Art for conservation) maybe away at the moment. There is also Zoophoria as well. I will try and link this journal to my friends list to pass it along if you like?

Its just disgusting isn’t it…
Apparently (from what I hear) they were teenagers who were kicked out for being ‘high’ earlier that day…
Just shocking and I hope they get what they deserve…

Soooo terribly sad… it sickens my heart when animals are thought so little of in our society. A truly unforgivable act.

I feel your pain Shannon!! Man destroys so much on this earth!! I only contribute what I can for environmental causes any more!! Screw people!! These Blue Iguanas are wonderful animals and why someone would want to harm them is beyond any comprehension imaginable!! In our life time if things don’t change we will see so many creatures disappear from this earth, until today I didn’t even know there was such a thing as a Blue Iguana!! Thanks for sharing this story….

Yeah, I hope they are found by the public first! I fear that as teenagers they will escape any real justice! Disgusting.

Thanks salsbells69,
I have joined Zoophoria – they don’t accept journals but I will add info about Pedro to his images. Thanks for the support – any publicity is appreciated for this worthy cause.

I hope the public find them first – then they’ll really know justice. The Cayman community of absolutely furious!

Thanks Derek, I am so angered by this I want to try and bring something positive by educating people about the cause and encouraging much needed donations – unfortunately now they have to spend money on Security!
