A friend introduced me to Paul in 1993. Two years later, I married him. He’s one of the good ones. Not that we don’t drive each other crazy sometimes — we’ve been together 18 years now, so crazy happens. But, for the most part, he makes life a whole lot better. Among other things, Paul has brought music into my life. Sometimes he noodles on his bass while I’m painting. It’s a nice combo. When Paul plays, I feel better. I hum and I move. And when Paul plays, he seems to feel better too. His expression changes with the music.
Up until now, I have painted only still lifes, mostly fruit. So this portrait was quite a challenge because Paul is almost nothing like a fruit. It was a departure for me also in that it was the first time I used oil paints. At least, I started in oils, but then switched to acrylics, which are less frustrating because they dry more quickly.
When Paul Plays (2011) is my eighth painting.
