Death in Dubrovnik…............

well WHAT did happen to…..........BRITT LAPTHORNE

this title has to do with the complexities of a missing girl….....

For those who live outside Australia you maybe interested to know that BRITT LAPTHORNE/ 21-year-old Melbourne woman went missing from a nightclub in the Croatian town of Dubrovnik on September 18. Her body was found many days later washed up near rocks not far from the city centre.

A few weeks ago I was fortunate enough to visit this wonderful city of DUBROVNIK…...........I felt I had found paradise and had been told this was a most magical place to take photographs. And yes/ I had found paradise and started to wonder about the war here in ‘91 /Death in Dubrovnik…...and then I started to think about this beautiful young woman taken tragically away from her family.

I walked the streets of the Old City and surrounds for nearly a week. The more I thought about her the more I wanted to find out about her and so sat in a local internet cafe and tried to read as much as possible about her. So this only made me think more about this young woman and how her family must have felt at the time .So then as I walked the streets every crack in the old walls /every crack in the pavement I photographed /I asked myself did she walk this way….........did she see the beauty I was seeing…....

This image was taken in Dubrovnok and is of the Fuego Latino Club where BRITT LAPTHORNE visited the night she died……..........well some locals say she did visit the club and some say she didn’t!

These images were taken from a 4th fl. balcony overlooking the nightclub. I watched for about 15 minutes. It would be impossible for this young woman’s exit from the nightclub to go undetected by the camera. I wonder why Britt’s parents could not see their daughter exit the club when they watched the film footage from that night…......

this image was taken at the small port in the OLD TOWN of Dubrovnik/this image is not meant to offend but something did happen to this young woman…......

!

The image below is of the camping ground above where Britt was found.

.............sometimes we don’t know what we’re looking for….......this image was taken at a hotel on the outskirts of Dubrovnik. The puzzle and anguish of this mystery can be too much for a family to experience….........

I’m going to tell you what’s on my mind!

The black-bordered work is fascinating, also…and both beautiful in their way.
(This cat is so like Cole, although Cole has no red or brown. Very disconcerting to see him looking “chained!”)

interesting that you have mentioned coal/but this cat hovering over the water/over dancing dark shadows brings other thoughts to mind for me…the black cat/ a symbol of death in this situation.
    thankyou for your comments

love your idea but the dancing light is a symbol of a young woman’s dreams for the future/the dark shadows a symbol of what stepped into her life and robbed her of her future and family love. The chain:the tragedy and crimes of the night…...........

    thankyou for your comments

I think black cat have been given a bad reputation. I had one for years. He was a wonderful creature…. Is the cat chained up or is that just an illusion created by the composition ? ( which is wonderful )
Titles… In the past I did not put titles, until people started hassling me about it so now it is the first thing that pos into my head.
About your comments re Britt,, so sad !!!

A good piece of work well done !!!

  • shanghaiwu replied

Yes/there is some mystery about black cats/be assured the cat is not chained. This image was taken in the small harbour in the Old City of DUBROVNIK and so the chain attached to a boat.
This photograph straight from the camera not something I conjured up in my mind so I even find this interesting/seemingly a black figure floating within the image…....... .
I think titles tell an intregral part of a story and agree with you here. Thankyou also for your comments

Interesting composition, and the chain to the boat does give the effect of the cat chained. It is an illusion of sorts, the story of Britt very sad. Too much of that today, girls gone missing. You have to be especially careful in places you do not know. Like DUBROVNIK they look beautiful and if your not aware of all the elements in a city you can be draw into a bad section, or run into things you have no understanding of. I know places like Croatia have a bad problem with the sex trade kidnapping women. Your picures capture your intensity and interest. They show the thoughtful side of your creativity. The symbolism of the black cat, and your mind thoughts are more meaningful than a title that is but a moments thought about a picture. Why so many see so many other things in it and yes it could be titled many ways. I just saw a cult film called Donny Darko, and when I saw your black cat after just seeing that I thought how symbolic. It too was about the death of a young girl, time travel, and the mind of imagination and illness. Great work.

your words so thought provoking…...the Lapthorne family have just been to Dubrovnik and such a painful journey for them.

It is vey important that this case is held open.

Answers must be found and the sooner the better but if it takes longer then the Croatian police MUST not rest.

teachers are responsible for students and their performance/doctors for their patients and so police to the public/particularly when there is talk about what little action was taken within the 1st 2 days this young woman went missing…..........

This strikes me deeply, first the image, I’m sure no kitties were chained, the story of the girl, and your own sensitivities regarding the tragedy. Who can explain such senseless brutality? Your documentation is so very thoughtful and appropriate!

great image and wonderful communication of the human condition – until I read your explanation of the photo I thought I was the only person I knew who had reacted this way … I understand what happened with you – a similar thing happened to me when young indigenous dancer died mysteriously in the back of a police car – for some reason I felt it intensely, but, unlike you, I had no way to express it – so, like you, I read everything about him I could find … we are indeed connected to each other in ways that are hard to understand and I appreciate that your photo has finally given me some expression of these inexplicable feelings of connection…
