Painted Lady Butterfly
The Painted Lady Butterfly is one of the most widespread of all butterflies, found on every continent except Antarctica.
The Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui) is a well-known colourful butterfly, sometimes known in North America as the Cosmopolitan.
Other closely related species are the the Australian Painted Lady (Vanessa kershawi), American Painted Lady (Vanessa virginiensis), and the West Coast Lady (Vanessa annabella).
The Painted Lady occurs in any temperate zone, including mountains in the tropics. The species is resident only in warmer areas, but migrates in spring, and sometimes again in autumn..

Did you happen to see the underwings? I got a picture of what appears like a Painted Lady but on my butterfly one underside of a wing was toward me and I did research in my butterfly book and I identified mine as a Painted Lady. Just curious if our butterflies are the same. I haven’t posted mine as yet. At least you image has the wings fully stretched out. I waited and waited and it didn’t happen for me. Hi Dee! I did a bit more in depth looking and found that it is a Painted Lady and not an American Painted Lady…. There are distinct differences that didn’t match up with my image since I did have other pictures of the underwings where the distinction shows up. I’m excited to see yours. I have links on this photo and the other’s that give information if you need it! I think we both are pretty blessed to be able to see one let alone capture one with the camera! take care! ♥ Jan

Thanks Lori! I was thrilled to see this butterfly or any butterfly for that matter… but that this one just happened by for a while just when I was out with my camera gave me a gift I didn’t expect. ( I call these moments “tender mercies” from God) I haven’t felt well and decided oh well, I’m taking my camera out. It is great how I can “lose” myself in the beauty and the concentration that photography requires and forget how lousy I felt. ha ha!! thanks for your continual support and friendship! ♥

I went to Wikipedia and I could have taken that shot. The pose was the same as mine but mine has a different posture in the body. The wing pose was the same and that is the butterfly that was in my yard. How cool is that. I will post mine asap, so you can see the image! Thanks! Dee
