This is Skaill Loch, with Skaill House on the horizon, during a blistering July sunset on Orkney. Skaill House overlooks the ancient Neolithic village of Skara Brae hidden from sight for over 40 centuries until uncovered from the sand during a great storm of 1850. The peole who lived there would have seen many sunsets just like this. Whether they saw them aesthetically, as we may do now, or perhaps considered them as messages or portents from the gods – well, we can only imagine…
skara brae, orkney, skaill, sunset, neolithic, stoneage, quite old
