“Illusion is the first of all pleasures.”
— Voltaire

Many of us have heard of the saying that “Life is an illusion.” It is casually declared by many, and with such certainty I might add, as if to imply an understanding of reality. But what does the saying really mean? Is everything really an illusion or is it wishful thinking on the part of humans? Or is it because as T.S. Eliot says, “Humankind cannot bear very much reality,” that we cling to our illusions even if they contradict the obvious?

Brilliant, Irene! Hope you won’t forget to add this one to Cutting Edge!

(It was Einstein who said, “Reality is an illusion — albeit, a persistent one.” I think like physicists today, he was referring to the nature of space, time and matter itself — composed of “what?” They still don’t know! Some say, “resonance.” Now they tell us, 90% of the Universe is dark matter/dark energy — they don’t know what those are, either! So yes, I imagine what we think we see and know is derived through our own perceptions — thus, “illusion.” I was struck by an analogy from another physicist on the Science Channel – don’t recall his name… he said, if the entire known spectrum of wavelengths was a strip of film it would stretch from San Diego nearly to the Arctic Circle up in Canada. The part that we can see would be ONE INCH somewhere in Seattle! That is mind boggling! As in your outstanding artwork, I guess our “monitors” are pretty small! lol
  • I like that saying, reality is constantly changing it seems as when I look at the same object or thought more than once I see or think of differently and so changing my reality of it, wish I could tap into the one tenth of my poor brain and figure it all out. I find it an intriguing subject and interesting hear to hear your view on this….thanks for your thoughts Nadya and have added this to your great group

In reality, I had never refused to face reality, and that then became my reality. That is, till it was time for me to do a “reality” check and find out what is reality.

  • wow, mind blowing reality twisting perspective on this and intriguing way of putting it thanks for your thoughts on this Ramesh, very much appreciated
