Why do Printmakers...PRINT?

Now that you are hooked by my clever title. Dear Marilyn requested that I write something about my prints, (after she said my work was going to be the avatar for the week on the Printmaking & Printmakers Group…sort of intellectual blackmail). I really appreciate this international honor.
I love to do linocuts, woodcuts, and silkscreen prints, because of the strong graphic quality you can achieve with the boldness of this media. My boldness in art is from my wasted youth reading and drawing comic books. You can find traces of this in my art today.(Everyone please look and comment!) As you get older your sources of inspiration changes from super heroes(youth) to life around you, religion, philosophical, and mystical imagery(old age).
What can I say to a group of amazingly talented printmakers that they haven’t heard before. Most other artists looking at our prints, don’t have an idea how they were done and don’t care…they comment nice drawing to looking at a woodcut.
Art is an expression of the soul, whether you draw it, paint it, sculpt it, or what. It is HARDER for printmakers because it take extra effort to create this expression. Printmakers feel that the effort is worth the task.
Why do Printmakers…PRINT? They all know that in 20-30 years those numerous prints are going to be worth a lot more than that ONE painting. After-all paper money is nothing more than PRINTS and there’s nothing more beautiful than a $1,000,000.00 bill. Thanks for reading this mess, Seth

I still see one minor difference between art prints and paper money. The beautiful $1,000,000 bill worths One Million NOW, not in 20-30 years (then it will probably worth half …). So I can easily understand why do Money Printmakers… Print!

As to your art Seth, it’s always beautiful, no matter how you create it!

Hi Seth – i love your comment about how printmakers feel the extra effort is worth the task – i find it is a bit like cooking – the fun can be in the creating and then at the end you get the result and there are heaps of techniques to throw into the mix along the way. Love your work.
