Manitoba Graveyard

When a wound goes unchecked,

it does not stand up
or sit down
on command

it simply becomes
even more
of itself.

There is a prairie graveyard
in southern Manitoba,
where all my old bones are buried.

Set on top of the truth
of sheer nautilus shells,
suspended clay prints of warriors,

and the ghosts
of tip-toeing gods
holding scythes of loam
in their cloisters of hands.

But none of those things
can feel

the soft of green meadow foxtails
against their galaxy
of milkyway skin,

or ripe lemon flax
conducting the wind
any longer;

only gravestones, and slate
bare-back markers,
inscribed
with words
or no words,

none, no more,
here, but not here;
silence
and perfect repose

can know

the weight
of the beating
and bleating
of spiraling
hearts
and these inside-out portals
of things—

and the humble
who come bearing orchids,
shifting their pain
to kneel.

Artist's Description

All of my family is buried in a small graveyard in the middle of the prairies in Southern Manitoba—going back to when they settled in Canada from Sweden and Denmark in the early 1900’s.
I love that little graveyard…
I miss home.
