Bagan – or Pagan as the British called it – was the most important city in Myanmar from the 11th century AD until the end of the 13-century, when the Mongols invaded. During that time over four thousand temples were built in an area of 40 square kilometres, and well over two thousand remain intact today. This picture shows the stupa-strewn landscape at sunrise.
