This is the Yellow Eyed Penguin found only in New Zealand. It is an endangered species and believed to be the rarest species of penguin.
The Otago peninsula has several tourist sites where one can view the penguins from blinds. The one we went to told us that they use 100% of the money they charge for conservation and protection of the penguins and local NZ fur seals. They are currently building a predator-proof fence around their facility, as mammalian predators such as wild cats, ferrets, stoats and weasels are the main cause for their demise, in addition to deforestation of their habitat. The day before we got there they had planted over 2000 trees. It is an ongoing project.
