Lamparas de dios
“Lanterns of the Lord”
The Yucca plant is the official state plant of New Mexico, my home. We refer to the beautiful white blossoms as ‘Lamparas de dios’ due to the bright mass of white flowers that protrude from a center stalk within the plant. The yucca is not only an attractive plant; it is has also been an important resource in past decades as its roots and palm-like leaves provided materials for the making of soap and baskets for those residing in the Southwest.
My ancestors made a wonderful, fragrant shampoo from the Yucca.
As with most every living thing in the desert, it is armed. The stiff leaves act as a defense against intruders, such is the case with agave plants.

Thank you, Frannie.
The Yucca is special to me, I look forward to their blossoms. There is a ‘special’ time when these magnificent blossoms emit a wonderful fragrance to attract a very dear, and necessary, little friend – the Yucca Moth. Other insects steer clear of it. Each Yucca species has its own moth which pollinates it. Amazing, que no? I’d say this is ‘true love!’
