Light Years

Self-portrait (No. 1 in new series, Rootless Tree)

You are as distant
as light years
as nearly gone
as a lost address
as a muffled voice
on the phone
indistinct in its absence…
a yellowed, fading photograph
curled in at the edges
but your smell
still lingers
like lilacs
on my fingers
and i sometimes see your face
reflected in passing windows…

    Very nice work.
Nice job with the tones and lighting.
I also like the neg space on the R side. Seems to balance the photo.

  • Selkie replied

Thank you Art – it was sort of an accidental shot setting up for this series…and it just caught me in a moment when the timer went off. I liked the expression on my face and the intense light…i think it fits perfectly in the new series, lol.

A classic, really high quality, portrait. Ranks with the famous portrait photographers’ work, imho. Great pose too. Composition, neg space, tones, lighting. Emotion, expression, shadows. The fading to black. Touched the bases.

  • Selkie replied

My goodness, Bruce, thank you…and to think i almost passed it by because it was an accidental shot. Thank you.

Lovely work S x. I too, like the negative space, to depict something missing. XX

There is so much more in this image than ‘just a portrait…’ It seems the ‘accident’ of the image so perfectly matches the ‘accident and chance’ of life… whatever our destiny may be.

  • Selkie replied

Beautifully put, DragonFlyer! I love that. I totally agree.
