American Woman

Selfportrait
Just a little Sunday social commentary...
First in a new series – “Politics, Sex & Religion”

American woman, said get away
American woman, listen what I say
Don’t come hangin’ around my door
Don’t wanna see your face no more
I don’t need your war machines
I don’t need your ghetto scenes
Coloured lights can hypnotize
Sparkle someone else’s eyes
Now woman, get away from me
American woman, mama let me be…

I didn’t get that it was blood on the hands at first. Now that I understand that, I understand the image. Devastating symbolism.

Love the index finger to the lips – that, to me, is the mastertouch here. You wonder whether you’re about to taste the blood, have already tasted it and are about to have another lick, or are contemplating your next conquest like an evil little girl who’s discovered she has superpowers and gets off on exercising them destructively.

  • Selkie replied

Thank you, B! I’m glad you told me about the blood, because perhaps the over-saturation takes away from making that clear…i’ll have to work it again maybe…
Your description re: the little girl is dead-on.
    You rule :).

HA. “Lady Liberty on a Bad Day.” You know, I think that might not be far wrong. May I suggest that you use that title? They say that blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church, and that liberty also requires the shedding of blood (to resist evil). Lady Liberty, I can imagine, might have to say sometimes, “I’m not taking any more crap, back away or I’m taking your head off.” Victims and the oppressed and the poor tend to know how much they need protection by violent means sometimes. Lady Liberty says, give me your oppressed and your poor. God bless.

  • Selkie replied

Lady Liberty is probably ready to fall down with a migraine at the political machinations of this country in the past decade or so…perhaps she’s gone a bit mad with that blood on her hands…
Perhaps i’ll name the next one that…
    Peace & Bless, B.
