Imperfectly

Self-portrait, 2007.

So, i’ve been digging through my endless photo files and came across this piece. Taken in Arizona when i was living there with a friend, after losing my job and getting evicted due to my health taking a rapid turn for the worst.
I had just started gaining weight back (and pretty much stopped here, lol) when i decided to take this shot.
I’m pretty much sick to death of seeing airbrushed photos of women with implants and anorexia and plastic surgery galore…my body is this way because i’m a bloody Real Person – and anybody who gets to see it up close and in person is damn lucky – stretch-marks, skinny arms and all.
My body has gone through so much; childbirth, spinal injury, serious chronic illness –
But i still pretty much dig it.

I think your body is great, great, great, Selkie!!!! I love it, I loved it already when you appeared here for the first time. And I can´t tell you how much I´m bored my women who are more plastic than natural!!!
Your body is great, and you are too, I love your strength and pride!!!!

  • Selkie replied

Thanks, X :). Entropy will take my body long before it takes my stubborn pride (and strength), lol.

And there’s nothing I appreciate more than openness and the strength of spirit and heart to do it. I so like your attitude, artistic or otherwise.

Totally with you on the airbrushing and false tits and perfectness. I love my curves, my tits piss me off BIG time, they are naturally huge and I hate them because they actually hurt. I love my stretchmarks, they are affirmation I have been through childbirth and something I make my boys look at continually to remind them lol. You live in your body well….if only other woman could be so comfortable and stop trying to be something theyre not. Well done you girl.x

  • Selkie replied

I think we all have things about our bodies that piss us off –
I will never forget the idiot jockstrap shouting “nice tits!” at me from a moving car when i had just had my son and they were ginormous (imagine 5’5 and 115 lbs with double D’s…christ).
I gave him the finger and shouted “I’m BREASTFEEDING, asshole!”
    Lol.
Anyway, our bodies are what they are and if we can’t love them as is, then we’re screwed big-time.
    Thanks, Mad, baby :)

  • madworld

    madworld

bwhahahhaa obviously deprived of mummas tits as a baby or breastfed til he was 25. Im 5’3…a G cup. Im surprised I dont stand on a permanant lean lol.

Thank you so much ambient :)

  • Tama Blough

    Tama Blough

Totally agree! I hate all the efforts to make us feel bad about ourselves. It is our “flaws” that make us interesting!

  • Selkie replied

Yeah, it’s insidious. You’re screwed if your beautiful, you’re screwed if you’re not. People make assumptions into your character either way – assumptions that are almost always specious and definitely misguided. Might as well just chuck the whole social paradigm out the window…

  • Tama Blough

    Tama Blough

Oh, and I have both you and Tracey beat on the titty front – there are many men I have met who could not pick me out of a lineup if my boobs were blocked. They are a blessing and a curse, for sure.

  • Selkie replied

    Lol…my god.
If not for the unavoidable neanderthal-male attention it would draw, we could have a contest for The RB’s Most Spectacular Breasts”!
I’ve had men tell me my body would be perfect if i had bigger tits.

I think women’s bodies just rock, all around. All shapes and sizes, y’know? We’ve got it goin’ on.

  • Cheryl DeLong

    Cheryl DeLong

Big tits are not what they are cracked up to be. Your back hurts, no one looks you in the eye and lord help ya when they start go south for the winter and never come back.

  • Selkie replied

Yeah, i remember from the bordering-on-DD days when i was breastfeeding how my back hurt. I’m thankful they’re back to my usual size, especially with my current back issues.

Hey Hon…. I think you are a gorgeous sexy diva of woman. Nothing like courage and artistic expression in a person in this phony conformist world…. bravo lady. And btw, I’m 5’1” and DDD. I think we should have a RB Most Spectacular Breasts, but not a contest. How about a celebration?

  • Selkie replied

Well thank you very much, my dear :).

I think a celebration is most definitely appropriate and in order…
    Viva las Tetas!!

(and then we can have a stretch-marks celebration…i’d dig that as well).

beautiful girl – strong and brave.

every woman has these demons, ones that leer at them from the mirror saying ‘you’re too this… you’re not that…’ but very few women have the courage to tell them to go to hell. true beauty is only in the real and this self-portrait is plenty real!

Beautifully put, hsien-ku. I truly appreciate you saying them here.

Good for you! I’m a guy and feel the same way about my body – bit of a tummy, etc. but I love it and people who see it are lucky, too, and anyone else who doesn’t like it can go to ‘ell. And, by the way, you look just sensational, and I mean it! So there!

  • JennyMac

    JennyMac

What an inspiration you are! I have been a fitness instructor for nearly 20 years and have never ‘fitted’ the body beautiful mould… I believe in caring for your body… it is your temple…and it is divinely beautiful no matter what fashion may say! I have stretch marks, saggy boobs and the belly button has never looked the same since 3 children… but my God… my body serves me well!!! Going by the reaction above… I think you have done something truly wonderful… : )

  • Selkie replied

    Jenny –
I’m quite floored by the reaction here myself! Although not entirely surprised, unfortunately. Having struggled with an eating disorder in highschool (and even a bit beyond), i had a huge reality check when i got sick and suddenly i needed my body to work for me, and…i often wonder if i hadn’t abused it that way, if i’d have been able to fight off the illness better. But, now at the very least i eat REALLY well, and treat it lovingly. I have off days, but hey…it’s War. Life is war, and our bodies are the bow and arrow, the sword, the slingshot, the tank, what-have-you. I’d much rather be a warrior than trampled under my own self-loathing, yanno?
    Cheers!

Contrary I, am not tired of viewing “enhancements”, as visual art. Make-up itself is akin to air-brushing, even wardrobe or jewelry is self-sake adornment. Variations on a theme sometimes fugue-like stutter, so current trends can’t last. I’ve always known that there are no ugly women, only short-sighted men, but vantage adjustment seems helpful. As a physical manifestation of the mind of god, corporeal woman fascinates. I am a victim of my own Y-chromosomes.

  • Selkie replied

Surgery and starvation are a far cry from cosmetics, lacey my dear.
The current trend has been on for…quite a long time.
    Foot-binding, anyone?

Ugliness is all subjective, as is beauty. And victimhood is a choice, hence this ‘ere photo :).

Bravo. This is a beautiful photo! Awesome work. Our bodies are the roadmaps of where we’ve been, what we’ve done and who we are. And it’s all G O O D. As Betty Friedan said, “The real enemy is women’s denigration of themselves.”

  • Selkie replied

Hear, hear. Thanks so much, Karen. It means a lot to me to have so many people coming here and speaking their minds on the subject. It’s all good, indeed!
