...and one for Mr. Huxley

I made this while listening to White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane incessantly and reading Doors of Perception by Aldous Huxley.

Go figure.

The flower is real, and is actually that size. The grow in Hawai’i, which is where i took this. Originally it was going to be the “Queen of Wands” card in my Tarot deck. I have another version as well and i’m still torn between the two…

No need to go figure – can “hear” White Rabbit radiating out of this image.

Incidentally, one of the most exciting 2 minutes in rocknroll history IMO. That climax is almost unbearable.

  • Selkie replied

    Why thank you, hotbee :).
I agree about that climax…it makes me feel as if i have bees in my cerebral cortex, speaking of bees…

What on earth ever happened to them, anyway…with that “Starship” crap…don’t get me started. Some people need to remain an anachronism and leave it at that. It’s a beautiful anachronism, after all…le sigh.

I’m with you on the Starship – some people just don’t know when to pack up and go home.
Fun picture, and I know that flower well – I think I have a painting of one I made in Hawaii, somewhere.

  • Selkie replied

I’d like to see that painting, Tama – it’s a gorgeous flower. Anything that pretty that’s the size of your head deserves to be in art :). Thanks!

So if you had a head the size of a daisy, this would work too? I didnt think anyone listened to JA anymore…they rocked.

  • Selkie replied

Ha! If i had a head the size of a daisy, i’d have REAL problems…;)

I grew up listening to them – and the Doors, and Bob Marley, Pink Floyd…
My mother was a bonafide hippie – which i suppose makes me a flower child (not a daisy…more of a lotus, heh).

  • madworld

Mines more melon size, now theres a thought. Gawd I could be your mother, you and my son couldve been twins separated at birth.

  • Selkie replied

    Heh.
You seem much more pleasant than the mother i grew up with – wouldn’t that be a fun turn of events ?!

I can see this as the Queen of Wands … love the hair extensions

  • Selkie replied

Yes, i think it would work.
No extensions – it’s all PS, baby :). Thanks!

White Rabbit will do that to you lol! and you’ve created a magical work;)

Agree completely about Starship. Still, the JA gave us WR and Somebody To Love, and for that I remain forever grateful.

Your mum might have been a hippie, Selkie, but The Doors were no hippie band…with Love, also from LA, one of the greatest bands in rock history IMO. You were brought up with some fine counterculture influences! Your art is a torch – keep carrying it.

  • Selkie replied

No, the Doors certainly were not hippies lol – they were hanging out with Warhol’s crowd. But the hippies dug them nonetheless :).
    Thanks much, hotbeeeee.
Never heard Love…will have to look them up innit.

Oh, DO check out Love, Selkie. Going by your taste – the little I know of it – you’ll dig them bigtime. They were The Doors’ stablemates at the Whiskey Au GoGo, but had drug and internal issues within the band and refused to tour. That diminished their chances of breaking big as The Doors did. Their first three albums are beauties: Love, Da Capo (except for the final track, which goes on an eternity), and their psychedelic classic Forever Changes.

  • Selkie replied

Ooo. Thank you for the info on that. I’m a glutton for new music, even if it is old :). Have you ever heard of the band Can, from same era? Fookin’ amazing…

  • hotbeetees

I LOVE Can!! Tago Mago is one of my favourite albums…especially that tremendous drum-riff-based track, Halleluja. Another German band from that time I like a lot – Amon Duhl 2.

Amazing, Selkie. I’ve come across very few people who know Can – and appreciate them.

  • Selkie replied

Oh, man – have you heard the cover-album where people like Sonic Youth do some of the early stuff?
I LOVE Monster Movie. Yes, it’s rare to find people who even have a clue as to who they are.
My friend – who was the lead singer for the Vindictives – has worked with one or two Can members. Too cool.

Great image – I love the Airplane and I still remember listening to Grace Slick sing that song and wishing someday that I could see the White Rabbit too…. well done…. a real stoner image!

  • Selkie replied

Lol – yeah, it is isn’t it? The funny thing is i was totally straight edge when i did this photo…
    Thank you!

... now that is something – the artist as a force of philosophical and colective art.

    Kirrill D’Kainn.

( ... get your hands on Grace Slick ( pre-Jefferson Airplane ) as lead singer for “The Great Society” – her original version of WHITE RABBIT is exactly a
    SIX minute track ) ... !

  • Selkie replied

    Hey Kirrill, thank you:)
I’ll definitely check that out – i’ve never heard of Great Society so this should be fun!
