Colleen Milburn
Wow. Amazing shot. A curse, indeed – but such beauty as well
Selkie replied
Thanks Colleen – i have SO many SPs of this thing. I can’t very well totally hate something that gives me so much material, it’s true :)
Colleen Milburn
It’s just so fabulously Victorian, and somehow mechanical as well – not sure where I get that from but that’s the feeling it evokes in me. This particular pic (I haven’t seen the others with the brace) is interesting, too, because of the contrasts between the modern top and the (seemingly) archaic brace. Sublime :)))
Selkie
Yes, funny i see it the same way; utilitarian and Victorian at once. I’ll be adding more of the brace soon :). Thank you!
Mizz1
i like it too, for the same reasons as colleen.. it’s like the machinery of restraint.. the but lace-up makes it erotic.. old worldly. great image, excellent pic, very provocative!
Selkie replied
Thanks, Mizz :). I like that, “the machinery of restraint”. Mind if i use that as a title someday? Bloody brilliant.
Tama Blough
My grandma wore one of these for years and years, probably way past the point of needing it. Looks much sexier on you, somehow – lol.
Selkie replied
Haha! Well thanks, Tama.
I try to wear it only when i need it, but yeah, it’s sort of a permanent fixture in my life…
madworld
This is great, and I agree with Tama, I find it oddly sexy. Love how youve ps this, well done
Selkie replied
Thanks :). When i first got the thing from the orthopaedic shop in Honolulu, my boyfriend at the time was with me – when i was being fitted for it he asked the saleswoman, “Does it come in black?”
Lol…
madworld
HAHAHAHAHAHA brilliant. Tony wouldve said the same thing. I work in Orthopaedics, must have a hunt round next time Im down there and see what I can rustle up. Life is strange, what you find as encumberment, others would find an asset and vice versca. Wear your scars and corsets with pride, they have all turned you into the woman you are today and given you the nounce with the camera!! Rejoyce in it!!!!
Selkie replied
Heh, men…:)
You can actually dye them – i’ve thought about that as mine has pink stains all over it now anyway from my favourite shirt…
Thanks so much, that’s a lovely thing to say. I wouldn’t have ever picked up a camera in the first place had it not been for my “handicaps”…so true!
~throws black sparkly confetti
madworld
No thank you, youve inspired me to try and get something done in the Ortho Department. More people like you are needed to show some of our patients that what they may think of as not the best fashion statement to actually turn it to their advantage. Ive got all sorts of things rolling around in my brain actually lol. I love people like you who take something that was once what you thought was probably a hideous accessory into something beautiful, it also takes the scariness out of the mystery for some. Im waiting for a quad bypass, the upside of it for me is the scars believe it or not. Good photo ops lol. Thanks for the confetti….and black happens to be my fav lol
Selkie replied
My goodness – a quad bypass huh? I’ll send good mojo your way for the surgery. I love photographing scars, i think they’re beautiful. Flawlessness is an illusion, you know?
Yes, once i actually put the brace on the first thing i thought (when i wasn’t in so much pain i couldn’t see, that is), “Photo ops!” I think the things that bring us the most pain are also the things that inspire us to our most profound and interesting work. I can’t wait to see the photos you do afterwards. The best of luck with the surgery and healing process!
Nicole Goggins
great processing
Selkie
Thank you, Nicole :)
Mizz1
no, i don’t mind if you use it as a title.. lol. go for it! it comes from my impressions of cybernetic/human-meets bondage… that’s a love of science fiction, metal and shiny things, buckles, sharp things and soft things, like flesh and restraint all combined.? -
Selkie replied
Thanks then i definitely will :). Are you a fan of Mobius, by any chance? I’m a science fiction geek myself.
Earhart Chappe...
love this one. so many different moods it evokes!-chhappel
Selkie replied
Thank you Earhart!
Mizz1
Mobius doesn’t ring a bell.. but i’ll go and google it. thanks.
Selkie replied
Amazing work – if you’ve seen Fifth Element – though he wasn’t originally credited the design of the aliens/cityscapes, all of it was pretty much his work.
annacuypers

That’s so cool :)
Michele Randell
Very emotive Selkie ….........!
And I can see the love/hate relationship you have with it…....one side you wear proudly as a fashion statement,........the other is how it encases you as if an outer skin for your body…....but it all melds beautifully into the woman you are….
Selkie replied
What a lovely comment, Michele – thank you so much…you’re right on about all of it.
Anne McGinn
I agree with Michele…. You have to live with it, and so you might as well talk about it visually… I totally understand. Like you said, its your personal prison that defines you in part. Thank you for letting us take a look at it too – and we all have our personal prisons… some on the inside, and some on the outside xoxo I love your strength…. that is your beauty
Selkie replied
Thank you, Anne! I think if people share a little bit of their “inner ugly” (which really is almost always oddly beautiful if you look at it in the right light), we all feel a little more connected and accepting of ourselves and others…
