Future Wife

i told him: keep writing
don’t mind the paint stained t-shirt
no one leaves their affairs in order
here’s to goodbyes to future wives
walking past potential exes

stuck in the past on training wheels
or in training bra removal training

thanks for the hour
tell the future mrs. i said “hi”
lost connection fixed into the lettering
years apart later like “what’s going on?”
sloppy sorrows with a side of handwriting
you ask your fellow students how you look

women look good like wintertime
their shoulders in possession of some of the same cool qualities
learn to cook and keep writing
go travel
be your own worst critic
your own best ex
your own next move
and let’s smoke
i need you to think
and let’s write
now what’s the last thing you remember?

some old reassigned phone number
another slab of animated sidewalk
a pair of glass doors
an ex future wife

keep your senses and utensils sharp
nearly a useless vessel
on a shopping spree
approximately the same person

only temporary
the reoccurring late city nights
sleep ’em off on following afternoons
easier to find a seat at the diner after midnight

hook it up fat
leave ‘em hangin’
let ’em wonder
let her wander
watch her walk on water

all in one piece
you’d possibly write away your finest hour
you no longer count down from ten when the ball drops
or sing happy birthday before you see the candles blown out

keep in touch
keep it to yourself
keep your distance
keep your feet on the ground
board an airplane

look around at what’s left
i wish ’em well
kiss and tell
but wait a spell
do so gracefully
spare the detail
and pay close mind

greetings from vacant hallways

hey Brennen how are you!?……i wondered where you had got to….as always your writing holds a great potent edge and is wonderfully composed and deep in its richness of meaning and craft

  • hello again Loui, i’d say i’m as well as ever in terms of basic health, i certainly hope you’re well also. it’s good to be back and good to hear from you again. i’ve been around, in the shadows, still writing. i’m happy to see your work is as prominent as ever, rewarding, much like your compliments.

sorry Brennan about that extra ‘e’ and missing ‘a’

  • no worries loui, it happens quite commonly, and i myself am not the best with spelling or sometimes even pronouncing certain names.
