Dopeless Romantic

i have another marker in my car and kind of a headache
it’s just my skin
a platonic old man with my eyes

& local women only want me around when i’m out of town
yeah girl whatever
i’m not any different
not a man made of concrete
cold solid stone
just last/best laugh’s leftovers
i am last year’s snowman
i’ve done it all in these swimming trunks
“new year’s eve in the desert
it’s new york city, i mean”

gold sweet mustard glaze
& all i could hear were airplanes

i can’t wait to get back in that bed
i found god
a tad too sweet
eating up the metal

falling through holes in the tall grass
alone in the yard with the creature creeping around the neighbors’
and i have beautiful white & blue hands

hometown gals evolve into big city folks
this year, may’s not until june
until then, it’s mostly october

hot house
“i ain’t sweatin’ it”
don’t let the harp turn you into a heartache
i’ve got the ice cream straight face
hello – farewell
focused drive live cd
lawnmower prep
picking needles from hay in springtime thunderstorm heat

i walk into a flower shop with a chicken in my hand
going 35 on 34
(3 long, deep hugs)

i’ve never seen god in church
i don’t think she’ll mind if i skip it

& i’ve got time to fish through my pockets for a lighter if you find me
& i’m a decent hugger
firm & gentle
intimate in length
i’ll hold you close until i feel your shoulder blades give
& yeah i’d like to see you again
i don’t want to be romantic anymore if it’s just something to sell novels with
but i’ve got a soft spot if anyone wants to put their ear to it

movies and emails keep me romantically updated

free hugs at the gathering
free handshakes at the reading

practicing practical phone tag tactics
a sexist/feminist

1990’s pixelated-something virtual simulation
& no lead heroine

i’m a crystal for the blood

i keep hearing her shuffling through the rain to my door
i keep seeing her headlights around the bend
but she’s not coming
she’s not out in this storm
these vibes aren’t from her
it’s not her cell phone ringing outside the open window

& i’m left with no romantic way to spend these rainy mornings
no dice rolling exercise/display of bravery/heroism

but i’m at a decent place
