A new terminal opened at the Sacramento CA airport a few years ago. While I normally use the airports in the San Francisco Bay Area, I had occassion to pickup my granddaughter and her friend at this fairly new terminal….and WOW, when I walked into the ground floor, this gigantic 56’ aluminum rabbit is leaping right through 3 stories of open atrium area in the terminal at me! Obviously, I took a photo:)
The creator of this magnificent rabbit is Lawrence Argent, who currently lives in Denver, CO. He was born in the UK and trained in sculpture at the Royal Melborne Institute of Technology. For this project he selected the rabbit because of it’s powerful symbolism-it is the subject of myths and legends. In some cultures the rabbit is connected with longevity, courage, and cleverness. In other cultures it is a metaphore for a messenger, while still other cultures consider it a symbolism of courage. But the most important reason the artist chose the rabbit is that it allows viewers to come up with their own story. This writer must also share with the reader that this new terminal is surrounded by many acres of fields where an endangered species of rabbit lives.
