Between the burning sun and the dark and dangerous depths of the sea there is a tiny space where, if you totally relax and feel at one with the elements, you can float.
I sailed in a trim craft, with taut sails and clean decks, but over time we drifted into the doldrums – the sails no longer billowed and the vanish cracked. Eventually I chose to dive overboard into the green sea and I floundered. I tried to tread water by writing, and the frantic movement of my arms stirred the depths to produce hundreds of beautiful bubbles that rose up to support me.
