Lightbulbs

it was after ten
we assembled in the living room
the lights from outside
spilled over the lamps
onto the floor

while we heard
untied all the words
caught them in our throats
and each drink became a vow
to everything before

we were all grabbing at the doors
finding a way to avoid
the t.v static and air con
that was trying to even out all
the creases in our clothes

and while our neighbours
walked their dogs at night
maybe if they tried
they could see our lamps
one by one go out

and as the streetlights burned
we kept our thoughts close to our chests

and slept with the windows open to the night

I find this so intriguing….it coaxes me into imagining all kinds of stories that might be hidden between the lines, wondering what happened next and where it took the characters. I like it, very much.
