Duncan of Jordanstone graduate in illustration and printmaking 2000.

After 10 years of painting the Scottish landscape, my recent work becomes more involved with cloudcover and its effect on light and colour through both its translucent and opaque properties. Clouds have the ability to refract and reflect, creating an ever changing perception of light which inspires my use of colour.

What impresses me most about your work Scott is its simplicity – what you don’t put in!

  • Thanks Martin, always appreciate your comments

I totally agree with Cobbybrook. Do you always use the square format? It is very effective.

  • Good question, I added the following comment to explain.

    The square format!!
I’ve been working predominantly in a square format for some time now. Not the usual format for landscape and that’s why I like it. It helps me concentrate on the abstract dynamics of the piece. Due to my experience with it, compositionally, I know my way round a square well and find it comes naturally to visualise subjects in that format.
However, its not exclusive, some more traditional approaches lend themselves to a panoramic format.

It works very well, and thank you for such a great explanation.

I agree. In fact, your use of the square has inspired me to get some square canvas stock myself and give it a go…
