Scott Naismith: Scottish Landscape

The Highlands and Islands of Scotland are depicted in Scott’s atmospheric and vibrant oils.
JAN: The Plane to Barra lands on the beach just beyond this croft.
FEB: This Sky study focuses on the effects of afterglow at sunset across the Western isles.
MAR: Crinan, Postcard picturesque harbour town located at the end of the Crinan Canal. My wife and I stayed at the Crinan Hotel owned by Scottish landscape artist Frances MacDonald.
APR: Looking West in the evening, cloud cover can become backlit and play tricks with perceived colour.
MAY: This place on the East coast of Barra allowed me a great opportunity to play with cool/warm colour contrasts and design-led mark making.
JUN: This loch (in the shape of the map of Scotland) I’ve painted many times. I pass it on trips to Skye and it looks different every time.
JUL: Sometimes what you want to say with colour can be restricted by reality for a representational painter… not here. This accurately depicts a recognisable landscape on Barra, while utilising many abstract elements.
AUG: When the horizon becomes unbroken all attention is focused on the forces of nature.
SEPT: The backlit effects of views out to sea from the West coast are in this case painted from memory.
OCT: Near the causeway from Barra (left) to Vatersay (right) this study captures a moment when the sun breaks out to strike the gulf stream waters which light up against the dark sky ahead.
NOV: Sometimes a literal depiction of a scene is the best way to highlight a postcard picturesque spot like this.
DEC: This describes the quality of evening light across the broken West Coast using contrasting translucent and opaque paint application.
