I don’t particularly like horses but I like this painting, Scott! The treatment of the neck is excellent and I like the simple background – very effective! I’m sure it was well-received by the client.

Thanks, Martin. Not much of a horse man myself but quite enjoyed this wee study. Difficult to be as “daring” as I would be normally had it not been a commission so limited the unconventiional to the background and compositional approach. Rarely take any work out-with my specialism these days, but sometimes its nice to try something different.

I used to do commission work with my cartoon illustrations many years ago, but I found it a hard business and really quite stressful and restrictive. I much prefer to follow my own direction these days but, as you say, sometimes it’s nice to try something different as you never know where it may lead!

I might have questioned if your style would have been a good fit for a subject such as a close up of a horse, but obviously it is a perfect fit. Very nice work Scott.
