a stilted companionship

I”m learning the TTV technique .....

My Kodak Duaflex II arrived in the mail today. It smells of Napthalene & has lots of grime & dirt in all the right places…...
Oh what a sweet thing!

I’ve now got to learn how to do TTV shots with some degree of decorum…. I’m so unco!
I still haven’t made a doo-hickie for shutting out the light…..I’ll get to that.

My little wooden friends were kind enough to share a moment with me, so I could give the Duaflex a run. This is their first couples portrait….. hope they like it.

woohoooooo!!!! Two of my favourite things in one! Most excellent Rosemary, well worth the wait!

  • Rosemary Scott replied

It’s been ages since I shot my little wooden friends….. it seemed fitting to use them for my first TTV shot – they were the only thing in the room that would sit still long enough for me to work out how to steer the cameras :))

It’s a bit tricky isn’t it? My Anscoflex arrived yesterday so I am going to build a contraption for it tonight and hopefully get off some shots with it tomorrow. I’m testing out a combination of a cut off wetsuit arm, a chai tea container, some cardboard, gaffer tape and a sock ;)

  • Rosemary Scott replied

Oh that’s so funny! TTV shooters must look a real sight! I have no idea how I’m going to put mine together… might have to do some research first I think :))

Thanks for that Rhana, so many ways to do it!!

I have no idea what anything is you said in your description….but…..this is a super cool image either way Rosemary! Don’t laugh at me!

  • Rosemary Scott replied

OH I can’t help it…. I’m laughing!! I’ve just read my description & realize that it probably does sound quite weird….. simply put, I’m trying the TTV technique for the first time.
I’m pleased you like it despite my ramblings :))

Wonderful shot Rosemary. Looks like you’ll be having loads of fun with the Duaflex.

  • Rosemary Scott replied

Thanks so much John. I’m really having trouble with everything being in reverse…. I’m sure I’ll get used to it…... I hope :))

Sure Shelly! Consider it done :))

What a great first TTV Rosemary! I really like this idea, so suited to the look and original too! Funnily enough, my Ansco Reflex arrived in the mail today too, I’m making the dark box contraption as I type this :)

  • Rosemary Scott replied

    WooHoo!! How exciting!
How’s that contraption coming along?...... Finished yet?
Glad you like this one Andrew, I’m looking forward to seeing your shots :))

  • parmi

    parmi

Literally just finished it now! I made it out of the box it arrived in and a whole lot of duct tape haha. Not sure how entirely effective it will be yet, but worth a shot! This is an exciting week for viewfinders all across the country :)

  • Rosemary Scott replied

Yay!! You’ll have to show us a shot of the contraption…..
Did you notice Rhana’s comment at the top of the page? She’s working on a doo-dad made out of a wetsuit, a sock & chai tea…...

  • parmi

    parmi

Yeah I’ll throw some shots up of it! I am starting to think this will be a temporary one until I can make something a bit more stable haha, so hard to juggle the viewfinder box and dslr with only two hands! Rhana’s sounds classic!!!

  • Rosemary Scott replied

Have fun with it Andrew :))

    Great! Nice double portrait :)
I like Woodies and TTV suits them apparently very well. And they are posing so nicely :)

  • Rosemary Scott replied

Weren’t they kind to pose for me? They’re really a very sweet couple…..
Thanks Lenka, really glad you like it :))

  • monocotylidono

The picture is great! Reading through all the comments above, I can’t help thinking of the sweet irony… Camera manufacturers are spending millions on research every year to perfect their optics, pinpoint autofocus, apochromatic and aspherical designs, and you go out of your way to “manufacture” rigs so that you can take pictures through the grimy viewfinder of a 1950’s Kodak! Well done you and two fingers up to them! LOL

  • Rosemary Scott replied

LOL!!! Oh you’re so right! It’s funny, I really love my DSLR, & I’m a digital person all the way (having never really done the film thing), but I had such a sense of elation when my old Kodak arrived today…. I’m just so excited!! I’ve always loved old stuff….. my house is full of bits & pieces from auctions, junk shops, my Dads shed….
so I think I love the idea of being able to produce a digital image while still feeling that I’m using something old & pre-loved.
    It’s odd…..
Thanks George, I’m really glad you like the image :))

Ok, So first of all, I waited for my little wooden man to arrive, But he is nowhere to be seen. I hope he comes soon as i have a few shots ined up ready for him. For rosemary’s sake, I have named him already ” Ben’ !!! ( oh god, ric is really touched in the head now). LOL !!!! Secondly, I have looked for a place to show how to make this sort of thing, to attach to a digital camera ! Can you help before i too turn into a possessed wooden little person ?!!!!!

  • Rosemary Scott replied

Hope Ben joins you soon Ric. Be warned though, he may be very demanding of your time! My two give me all sorts of trouble!

As for making the TTV contraption, Rhana was good enough to write this journal about it. Make sure you get yourself a vintage TLR camera first….

  • Ric Alexander

    Ric Alexander

thanks rosemary, Gonna take a look there now. HA ! He is already proving trouble by stopping off somewhere on route, Probably in paris having a coffee in a cafe somewhere ( oh god, Im off to find some tablets LOL). Off to ebay to find a camera i think hehehe

  • Rosemary Scott replied

    Oh dear….. he’s going to be trouble…..

Lovely work Rosemary and a nice still life for your first TTV attempt – makes it much easier when they don’t move!

  • Rosemary Scott replied

Thanks so much for the feature Sylvia! That’s so exciting for my first TTV.
It’s funny you mention the stationary models. I tried shooting my kids & quickly realised that wouldn’t work at my particular skill level.
It’s so hard to get used to everything being backwards, & reversed, & why we only have 2 hands is completely beyond me!!
    I’m hoping it’ll get easier with practice….

  • maremarie

    maremarie

Ah, this is gorgeous! Love their little sit-in, their get-together…... haven’t made anything to shut out the light for my vintage camera, so I’m only doing fake ttvs at the moment – this looks much better!! :-)

  • Rosemary Scott replied

Glad you like it! I love your fake TTV’s, but if you’ve already got the camera, you should build a contraption & see what you come up with…. it could be lots of fun!

  • Kitsmumma

    Kitsmumma

I think that’s one of the first major ‘surprises’ for most with TTV, that everything is in reverse, you move left to go right, etc. Moving subjects are very tricky unless taken from a fair distance. The second surprise and probably the hardest to master is that fact that you really need to be an octopuss!
It is frustrating, cumbersome, fiddly (I’ve walked away from many attempted shots in exasperation) but well worth the effort for the end result.
Look forward to seeing more from you :)

  • Rosemary Scott replied

I’d read somewhere that everything would be in reverse, so I thought I was prepared for it…. wrong!! I felt completely unco!
But I’m going to have lots of fun learning to make it work…i do love a challenge.
Now I just have to stop my kids playing with the Duaflex!

  • maremarie

    maremarie

Thank you, Rosemary, and yes, I just have to get it done….... just gotta recover the interest in handicraft work we all have as children I guess :-))

Love this tender moment. It proves there’s someone for everyone! I’m sure your little friends are thrilled with their portraits! Beer cans and rubber bands or washers make good doo-hickies, if you paint the inside black. Black duckt tape shouId do pretty well, too. have a lovely over/under Rolli- like off-brand. I’ve been going to load B&W film in it- have missed using it these last many years.
Let’s see, there are some nice Groups for these two:
Two Beings Group - Sets of Two - 100% (You decide what the world loves, remembers) - Love is - Pictorialist Photography (calm photos that cause second look) - Bubbler Portraits - People & Portraiture - Studio Lighting – 2/day - Tone it Down (Sepia, Black and White only). Some of these might not think they should show this, but it costs nothing to find out. LoL! Shows how much they know. . .

Wow, I went to look at the “contraptions” discussion. What fun everybody’s having. I like the “locomotive” one. LOL, what a blast! The accordion part could be used for focus, too. Too much fun! and What a variety!!

  • Rosemary Scott replied

It’s crazy over there!! So many different ways of doing the same thing…. There’s one that’s a bag with a neck strap…. I quite like that one.
