Tribute
My Father….
He’s been a Grazier his entire life, but now finds himself in retirement living in a small city…..
No more manual labour, no more getting up before dawn, no more cracked & bleeding hands…...
Dad is of that generation of people who dress in their good clothes to go out…. even if it’s only to the supermarket. Clothes must be ironed, & there’s usually a hat involved…..
Somehow I was able to convince Dad to sit for a formal portrait but without dressing up. I wanted to catch him in his work clothes. Clothes that now do the gardening, rather than mustering or shearing sheep all day.
Dignity comes from within, does it not?

Forgot to mention the chair and the wall are divinely matched, and their colouring and tone are a perfect backdrop in the natural light (awesome btw). Is there TA in this?
Rosemary Scott replied
Ahhh, you clever thing you! Yes, I used TA on this…. I think it was vibrance on the clothes & chair, & just a tiny smidgen of detail & sharpening in the skin. I had to bring out most of the lines of the face & hands with dodge & burn…. TA was just really too harsh for what I was trying to achieve.
I’m glad you like the result Peter :))

This reminds me so much of my own Dad….....................pruning roses just is not the same as being the “Gun shearer” on his team.
Rosemary Scott replied
I hear you!! They’re a unique breed, the Aussie Bushman…..

Ann Rodriquez
This is an absolute treasure, Rosemary! Priceless. For years to come this will speak of who your dad is. Truly a special portrait. I love that you were able to convince him to stay in his work clothes…so fitting for capturing the essence that is him. Love that missing button and the contrasts that are created here. A beautiful work of art!
Rosemary Scott replied
What lovely things to say Ann! I do see this as a fitting portrayal of my Dad. I just wish I’d been a bit handy with a camera while he was still working the land…. that would be the ideal setting to capture him.
I love the missing button too…. this’ll sound odd, but it just has a certain “humanity” about it….

Portraiture is among those genres which I absolutely love, and this portrait of your father is a brilliant example of that style of portraiture which is, I think, among the most challenging. It is straightforward and unpretentious. It is “HONEST” in the best sense of the word, within this context. It coveys, with no fuss, character, and I suspect a dimension of integrity. Your decision to add a tiny smidgen of detail & sharpening in the skin was a subtle one, and is an example of the tiny addition having an impact which adds a quality which is almost disproportionate to enhancement. He seems unconcerned with posing, with “would a profile showing ny ‘best side’ be wiser?” He looks at YOU straight on, his eyes alone telling a story. Outstanding.
Rosemary Scott replied
What wonderful things to say Kevin. Your very kind words have shown me that all I was aiming for in this portrait has actually worked. When it’s an image of someone you know so well I think you’ll always see the character of a person…. but when a stranger can see those same qualities….. success!!
Thankyou so much.

An excellent portrait and tribute Rosemary….....you have brought his qualities out very well.
Rosemary Scott replied
I appreciate your thoughts Wayne, Thanks very much :))

beautiful … I know that’s probably not the right thing to say about such a wonderful, strong and masculine image … but that’s what I’m seeing!!! I really admire your lighting and image “feel” ... I can’t put my finger on it … but it’s as if there’s a invisible texture here … and in other images of yours that I’ve seen. And yes, you’ve absolutely conveyed your father’s sense of dignity. To appease his obvious uneasy feeling about the clothing (my parents were like that too … and I’m pretty much a dresser-upper to go to the store, too, lol) you might ask him if he’d like a fancy dress-up portrait to go with?? Bless his heart!!!!
Rosemary Scott replied
Lois, this is such a lovely comment, & I thank you for it.
I’m intrigued by your reference to an “invisible texture” in my work. It’s often difficult to put your finger on what exactly makes an image…. I’m so pleased that the “feel” of my images appeals to you.
You’ve made my day!! :))
Lois Bryan
Rosemary, I wish I could express myself better … but I think you understand what I’m going for … you have a technique that creates a wonderful … well, I want to use the word “glow” ... yet that’s not quite it either. I’ve seen it in other works of yours as well … for example, on his shirt, it’s almost as if it’s made of satin or silk … although it’s probably not. Yet … that same sheen is visible … but oh so subtly … in his face and arms and hands as well. Whatever it is, I’m really intrigued with it … and it totally raises your art up to a magnificent level!!!
Rosemary Scott replied
These are such lovely things to say Lois, Thankyou so, so much!!!
Whatever it is that I’m doing, I’ll be sure to keep doing it!
David Hibberd
So much character, awsome shot, I’m so glad you got him in his working clothes
Rosemary Scott replied
Thanks David. The work clothes were essential for this one. I’m lucky he didn’t object too much :))

John Platt
Got my vote in mood and ambience Rosemary. Head and tails above the rest, dignity does indeed come from within and with it, respect.
Rosemary Scott replied
That’s very nice to hear John, I really appreciate your support. You’ve put a big smile all over my face this morning, Thanks very much :))
